The situation that I don't know if the cat approached me or if I approached her. (It doesn't matter.)

Witnessing a moment of the cat's lengthening body and its flexibility.

Being allowed to pet some soft parts of the cat in a coincidence.

Attaining an ability to stretch a second to eternity as if the cat's body did.

But never knowing her face or tail.

Being aware of and feeling grateful her paws hide claws while I pet her.

Carry on imagining the sharpness of the claws, quietly blinking eyes, and finally falling into a sleep.

A promise to never wake her up.

Repeat it over ten years.



‘Consistency’ is a series of 15 landscape paintings that erase the scenery before our eyes and redraw it with sounds. Heejin Jang disrupts the boundaries between what appears and disappears, as well as what changes and what remains unchanged, through the disassembly and reassembly of noise and improvisational variations. The 15 tracks enable the audience to imagine new dimensions of time, space, climate, and stories through the transformation and accumulation of minor sounds discovered on Jeju Island.

Heejin's focus lies in the flow of water and wind in field recordings collected in the Yeongdeunggut and Hado-ri areas of Jeju, layering the speed and direction of energy. She likens this process to the moment when islands come together to form an archipelago. Water embraces islands and continents, flowing in various colors and shapes daily. Similarly, the invisible journey of sounds that travel through the air connects people to people, people to islands, islands to continents, ultimately etching itself into their ears.

The multiple layers of tremors, even observable with eyes closed, and sounds that can only be heard with eyes closed, stimulate the audience's ears and bodies, making them aware of the movements of beings surrounding them. The sound that reaches one island moves restlessly until it reaches another island. This is Jang’s effort to grasp and remember the tiniest fragments of her story amid the vast stream of noise that has no discernible beginning or end.
Through these 15 tracks, Heejin reminisces about the beginning of her solitary journey and hopes that her future journey will continue to be consistently noisy and discomforting.

This trip began in San Francisco in the fall of 2012. I sat on the floor of the graduate school hallway and covered my eyes with the long cloth given to me by Laetitia Sonami. I closed my eyes and sat still. I could feel the waves of sound slowly enveloping me. I heard the distant footsteps of students passing through the hallway, the sound of metal doors opening and closing and scraping on the floor, the sound of someone breathing, and the busy sound of machinery in the muffin factory on the third floor. After about 10 minutes, the students returned to the classroom and shared their experiences of the sounds they heard. They each became an island and waited for the sound. The sounds lurked on the staircase, in the hallway, in the ice cream factory on the first floor, in the chocolate factory at the end of the hallway, and in the muffin factory on the third floor, and soon embraced the bodies of people who had become islands like sea water seeping into the white sand beach for a long time. Everything alive was making sound. Invisible sounds took on new shapes through the clothing of people's imagination. Since then, noise has become a hand that leads me to new places, and live performance has become an invitation to take people with me to an unfamiliar world of familiar sounds.

<Consistency>는 눈 앞의 풍경을 지우고 소리들로 다시 그린 15점의 풍경화 연작이다. 장희진은 소음의 해체와 재조립, 즉흥 변주를 통하여 나타났다가 사라지는 것, 변하는 것과 변하지 않는 것의 경계를 어지럽힌다. 15개의 트랙은 장희진이 제주에서 발견한 사소한 소리들의 변형과 쌓기를 통해 관객들이 새로운 시공간과 기후, 그리고 이야기를 상상할 수 있게끔 돕는다. 희진은 제주 영등굿, 하도리 일대에서 채집한 필드 레코딩에서 물과 바람의 흐름에 주목하여, 에너지의 속도와 방향을 겹겹이 쌓는다. 희진은 이 과정을 섬과 섬이 모여 하나의 군도를 이루는 순간에 비유한다. 물은 섬과 대륙을 끌어 안아 매일 다른 색과 모양으로 흐른다. 공기를 매개로 이동하는 소리들의 보이지 않는 여정 역시 사람과 사람, 사람과 섬, 섬과 대륙에 도달하여 그들의 귀에 새겨진다. 눈을 감아도 보이는 것, 눈을 감아야 비로소 들리는 소리들이 만들어내는 여러 겹의 떨림은 관객의 귀 또는 신체를 자극하며 관객의 몸을 둘러싼 존재들의 움직임을 알아차릴 수 있게 만든다. 하나의 섬에 도달한 소리는 쉬지 않고 움직인다, 또 다른 섬에 닿을 때 까지. 이것은 시작도 끝도 없는 거대한 소음들의 흐름 속에서, 그녀를 스쳐가는 이야기들의 아주 작은 부분을 붙잡고 기억하려는 희진의 노력이다. 장희진은 15개의 트랙을 통하여 그녀의 고독한 여행의 시작을 기억하고, 앞으로 이어질 여정들이 ‘일관되게’ 시끄럽고, 불편하게 지속되길 기원한다.



시작:

이 여행은 2012년 어느 가을 샌프란시스코에서 시작 되었다. 나는 대학원 복도 바닥에 앉아 교수님이(Laetitia Sonami) 준 기다란 천으로 눈을 가렸다. 나는 눈을 감고 가만히 앉아 있었다. 서서히 소리의 파도들이 나를 감싸오는 것을 느낄 수 있었다. 복도를 지나가는 학생들의 먼 발자국 소리, 철문을 열고 닫히며 바닥을 긁는 소리, 누군가의 숨소리, 3층 머핀 공장의 기계가 분주히 돌아가는 소리를 들었다. 학생들은 그렇게 10여분 정도를 보내고 다시 강의실로 돌아와 각자가 들었던 소리의 경험을 공유했다. 그들은 저마다 하나의 섬이 되어 소리를 기다렸다. 소리들은 계단참에, 복도에, 1층의 아이스크림 공장, 복도 끝의 초콜릿 공장, 3층의 머핀공장에 숨어있다가 이내 백사장에 스며드는 바닷물처럼 섬이 된 사람들의 몸을 한참 동안 감싸 안아주었다. 살아있는 모든 것은 소리를 내고 있었다. 보이지 않던 소리들은 사람들의 상상력의 옷을 입어 새로운 모양을 가졌다. 이후 소음은 나를 새로운 곳으로 이끌어주는 손이 되었고, 라이브 퍼포먼스는 나와 함께 있는 사람들을 익숙한 소리들의 낯선 세계로 데려가는 초대장이 되었다.
